I've been talking about it a lot * the week of terribly big-time stuff.
A string of opinionated random thoughts.
Love
A book moment:
In true passionate and imperious Vreeland fashion, I started reading again D.V. Diana Vreeland, and the world became a better place. First and foremost, it steered me away from being devastatingly understated like Tilda from last week. And I went all in with accessories.I have started reading more and more about recession dressing, or depression dressing, and who are we kidding now? Who isn’t depressed? At the same time, this week was the anniversary of the Liberation of Italy from fascism, and after a friend pointed out the inherent chicness of le donne della resistenza I couldn’t help but think about a luxury in the absence of abundance - a concept which served as a cornerstone of my book. This kind of luxury is the kind I learned from my grandmother, who taught us that you can use a leaf to make a broth and one beautiful accessory to make an outfit. Beautiful. Simple. Timeless. Defiant.
You know how my tagline is “luxury is a state of mind” which is a bit of a catch phrase for some, but for me it’s such a way of living, thinking, breathing, and eating, that I had an epiphany: the be chic you also have to dream chic. I leave it at that, you take it as you please, but I think it’s a good tip.
Ordinary living: a perfect affogato al caffè and the books on the floor, the only clutter I thrive in. Because clutter is visually, devastatingly exhausting.
The globalization of indifference is a very ugly disease. - Pope Francis
I don’t care
For the uncultured who perform a looking-smart show.
I despise how I walked into the H&M store in Lincoln Road and bought white T-shirts. It feels like I relapsed in the week when we remembered the tragedy of Rana Plaza. I did it.

How do you say it in Italian?
Morto un papa se ne rifà un altro, which means when a Pope dies, we make a new one. We don’t get to say it that often, but ogni morte di Papa (which means rarely) we do. I am not religious, although I was brought up as a Catholic; our upbringing was rhythmically regulated by holidays, practices, and the comforting traditions that came with them. I found spirituality later in life, ironically after distancing myself from the dictates of the Church, I started perceiving a strong connection with an ethereal world that didn’t require mandatory confession and those three Hail Marys to cleanse your conscience and go to Paradise, that questioned why a woman cannot become a priest or a cardinal without a clear answer. I believe there’s an energy pole beyond the material world where Jesus, my grandparents, St. Francis of Assisi, and my father all live harmoniously. This Pope had chosen my Saint name because of his connection with the life and teachings of San Francesco, and yes, I was touched by his loss. And now we make another Pope.
